The ISO 14001:2015 is globally known Environmental Management System (EMS) International Standard, refers to a system used by an Organization to manage & address immediate and long impacts its activities, product or services in a way resulting to curtail or eliminate the adverse impacts on environment. It involves developing, implementing and maintaining policy focusing on continual improvement and environment protection.
These standards are developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), which has from committees all over the world. The scope needs to be checked as to whether the limits of the EMS are clearly and credibly defined and whether the organizational context and expectations of interested parties have been sufficiently taken into account. The organization should define the scope in an appropriate place in the EMS documentation, and in a form suitable for external circulation, so that it is available to interested parties as well.
Examples of "third parties" are clients, communities, suppliers, regulatory agencies, non-governmental organizations, investors and employees. There is no obligation to actively approach these groups, but those who have shown an active interest and from whom relevant demands and binding obligations accrue should be taken into account.
Responsibility for the EMS is clearly conferred to the highest management. Activities can be delegated to other top managers and other individuals (including external individuals). It is still possible to concentrate many activities in the hands of one person, but a division of labor is equally possible.
According to ISO 14001:2015, environmental aspects and all related side effects that can arise from activities and products must be considered, to the extent that they can be monitored and influenced. The "life cycle" of a product, for example, should include production of raw materials, development, manufacturing, transport, use and disposal.

In accordance with life cycle considerations, further aspects of procurement, product development, delivery, use and end-oflife treatment must be taken into account, in addition to direct environmental aspects in manufacturing or service processes. Suppliers and contract partners, especially third-party processes, have to be controlled. This may include the necessity of providing suitable information about significant environmental aspects related to the product or service.
As far as is possible and reasonable, an analysis of environmental performance must be carried out for environmental aspects connected with activities that have a significant environmental impact, with binding obligations, relevant process steering and in terms of the measurability of progress towards environmental goals.

According to ISO 14001:2015, an improvement in environmental performance, which in most cases can be shown with reference to established indices, is desired. Improvements in individual system elements (i.e., training, communication) can also represent an improvement of the whole system; however, this is not alone the purpose of the management system and is therefore not sufficient in the long run.
